Life is complex, messy, and full of love and loss. There are good days and bad days, but they are your days as a family and should be remembered just for that, as they were. Unscripted, beautiful and full of the essence of you and your closest ones.
A day in a life shoot aims to capture your relationships and bonds, the love you share for each other, faults and all. It’s a way to remember years down the line what life was really like in that moment.
I joined Ali and her family on a sunny autumnal day, and I first met them whilst they played games in bed as they normally do as a family every morning. Games play a major role in their lives as Ali and her partner Ben both work in the gaming industry. The day unfolded as it would do every day and the privilege was mine to be able to share it with them. To be there for the play, the mealtimes, the forest walks, the laughs and the tears.
The whole family accepted my presence there as if I were there every morning, as they went about their routines and schedules. To be able to get access to someone so deeply so quickly is very special to me, and I am always so grateful when families open up their homes and themselves to me. Ali welcomed me with open arms and I felt like I was spending the day with an old friend, when in fact we had only just met! The boys allowed me into their space and I got to know them and their personalities pretty fast. We spent a fully packed day exploring who they are as a family, you’d be surprised how much you can see and learn in one day.
Life is built up of many small and wonderful occurrences that will go unnoticed, and it gives me great joy to record these.
